New Bonds – A Special Family Member

Dentistry sure brings some unexpected perks! Today’s post is about one of the best things that happened to me and my family, thanks to being a dentist.

If you’ve read my earlier posts, or know me at all in some way, you can probably tell that I like talking to my patients. Most patients seem to get anxious when visiting the dentist. Part of doing my job well includes putting their mind at ease and making them feel comfortable. I find chatting with a patient is the easiest way to do this.

C, a wonderful patient of mine loved talking about her kids and their pets. I must confess that I was never a pet person and had never had a dog, or any pet for that matter. So, though I had little to add to the conversations, I still enjoyed listening to her. She used to show me pictures of her new litter of puppies. I guess I must have responded with the appropriate politeness and carried on with my day.

One fine day she showed me a picture of this puppy and I don’t know how or why, out of nowhere I just asked her if I could buy that puppy from her. She said that she had sold all the other puppies but she wanted to keep this one as everyone in the family had gotten attached to him. I could not let go of this puppy’s picture and made up my mind that we needed to get a pet.

A couple of weeks later, C asked if I still wanted the puppy as they were moving to a different state and could not take the puppy with them. Overjoyed, we brought him home when he was about three months old. This was six years ago and I am forever grateful to C for bringing “Hoops” into our family. He infuses happiness into our lives every single day and as they say, some relationships are destined to be in your life. Like the special bond we share with Hoops. C and her family have moved to a faraway state, but we keep in touch as family. Thank you so much C and familyJ! ‘

I love being a dentist. But I’ve got to admit, some days make it even better.

My best always.
